Leadership Lessons from the Amazon: Cultivating Self-Leadership

I’ve been reflecting deeply on my time assisting in the funding and facilitation of leadership congresses among the Peruvian Amazon’s indigenous populations. Some reflections have focused on the phenomenon of leadership itself, like:

What drives leadership?

Leadership starts with self-leadership. If we can’t lead ourselves, we can’t lead others.

But how do we become the leaders of our own lives, and what drives our leadership?

For the indigenous populations I’ve worked with, stepping into leadership is almost a necessity. These incredible human beings, many of whom I call brother or sister, are often thrust into leadership roles by circumstances beyond their control. Their survival, culture, and sacred lands depend on their ability to lead, influence, steward, and protect.

If not leadership, then what? Forced displacement, exploitation, destruction of sacred and ancestral lands, pollution of their homelands and rivers, and in extreme cases, assassination.

What do we need to overcome in order to truly lead?

This makes me think about how many of us in modern, Western countries grapple with leadership. What do we need to overcome our fears and insecurities so we can pursue our deepest, most heartfelt desires and dreams? When will we allow the strength of our dreams and missions to be stronger than the strength of our fears and inhibitions?

Do we need to feel that our life and everything sacred to us literally depends on the fulfilment of our dreams to step into self-leadership?

Leading towards a bigger purpose

I’ve learned a lot about leadership in life, and it got me thinking… Maybe I can help YOU tap into your deepest dreams and cultivate an attitude of living as if your life depends on those dreams being fulfilled?

True leadership starts with leading oneself toward a purpose bigger than any fear and is exercised most powerfully in the spirit of excellence.

Before we can cultivate that excellence, we must truly FEEL the purpose of our leadership to realise it. If we can truly feel it, realising it may become a non-negotiable in our lifetime, and that’s where powerful feats of magic unfold.

Are you struggling to find your own sense of self-leadership?

I’m here to help.

Blessings,

Marc-John
